Knopper Galls appear on the acorns on oak. They are induced by a gall wasp, Andricus quercuscalicis.  They start off red and sticky and turn brown before dropping to the ground in autrmn.  The wasp needs two types of oak to complete its lifecycle - the pendunculate and turkey oak - over two years
